We tested 31 different commercial products for their desulfurization performance, generating over 2,400 data points. Our iron-based material, derived from water treatment processes, achieved an average desulfurization efficiency of 77%, comparable to iron chloride but without the associated corrosion effects. No correlation was observed between iron concentration and desulfurization potential, indicating that increased iron levels do not consistently improve desulfurization performance. We also looked, how much product was needed in order to achieve 75 % Desulfurization.

Mining-derived iron hydroxides often form in natural waters over longer periods, where particles have time to age, aggregate, and recrystallize into larger flocs or more stable phase.

Wastewater iron hydroxides are typically more reactive because they are freshly precipitated, poorly crystalline, and high in surface area, whereas mining-derived iron hydroxides often age into more crystalline and aggregated phases with fewer active surface sites.
